Q: What is powder coating?

A:  Short answer: Powdered paint that is fused to metal.

Long answer: Powder coating is a method of painting metal without liquid paint.  It’s a dry finishing process where finely ground particles of pigment and resin are electrostatically charged and sprayed onto the part to be coated. The parts are electrically grounded so the charged particles adhere to them.  Then the particles are melted in a curing oven forming a solid coat and fusing to the metal. The result is a uniform, durable, high-quality finish frequently used on applications ranging from air conditioning systems and hardware to furniture and marine instrumentation. Many powder coatings can withstand extreme service conditions like pressure, temperature, mechanical wear, chemical corrosion and outdoor weathering.

Powder coating is available in any color with high gloss, low gloss, metallic and clear finishes.
Powder coating also offers texture choices like smooth, matte, rough, and wrinkle.

Q.  What are the advantages of powder coating over liquid painting?

A:  Superior Finish:  Powder coatings offer a more uniform surface than liquid paint without sags, drip marks and other surface irregularities.  The finish also reduces porosity, resulting in fewer surface imperfections.
Powder coating is available in any color, several finishes, and several textures.

Durability:  Powder coatings resist cracking, peeling or marring, which can minimize shipping and handling damage.   Powder coating is also resistant to fading, abrasion, chemical corrosion, weather corrosion, extremely high and extremely low temperatures.
Specialty powders are available to meet your durability needs, and our expert staff are here to help you choose the right finish for your application.  Clear coats are also available.

Environmentally friendly:  Powder coating is environmentally friendly because it saves energy, does not use solvents, does not release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere, and unused powder can be recovered and reused.  Powder coating meets EPA standards. Waste is negligible. Health and safety concerns for workers are minimized due to a clean work environment, minimum clothing contamination, and no fumes.

Cost Effectiveness/Efficiency:  Powder coating reduces cost in equipment, labor, material, and energy compared to conventional liquid painting systems.

Costly air pollution control equipment is not necessary.  The exhaust required in powder coating ovens is lower, and helps reduce energy consumption.  While ovens that cure solvent-based coatings must heat and exhaust huge volumes of air to protect against potentially explosive fumes, the exhaust volume of a powder coating oven is lower and more manageable.  The air is able to be recycled into the plant.  Easier compliance with federal and state regulations also increases cost-effective savings.

Powder is supplied ready-to-use; no mixing or viscosity control is necessary.  A variety of coating chemistries can be applied with the same equipment. The desired film thickness can be achieved in a single pass for most applications.

Powder coating offers a simplified line process that is less labor intensive.  Since no drying or flash-off time is required, a powder coating production line moves more efficiently than a standard paint line.  More parts can be coated automatically with significantly lower reject rates.   Parts can be racked closer together on the conveyor and pass more quickly through the production.
